Peveril Homes continues its support of The Belper Games

We are delighted to announce that we will once again be sponsoring the Belper Games – an annual event running from the 20th – 22nd July organised by local charity, Penny’s Fund.

The Belper Games was set up by Penny’s Fund in 2013 following the passing of Penny Wheeler, the wife of a former Peveril Homes site manager. Penny was diagnosed with two rare illnesses in 2007; Systemic Scleroderma and Pulmonary Fibrosis – and Penny’s fund was initially created in 2010 to raise money for her treatments.

Penny sadly passed away but since then the charity has gone from strength to strength – raising both money and awareness for ataxia, scleroderma and pulmonary fibrosis as well as setting up the Belper Games to encourage donations for three local charities.

The first charity, The Scleroderma Society, was founded in 1982 and provides information and support for those affected by Scleroderma, including their families. Services provided by the charity include a helpline, an annual conference and a quarterly newsletter, with all money raised for the charity put towards scientific and medical research into possible treatments.

The second charity that benefits from the Belper Games is The Pulmonary Fibrosis Trust, which assists people living with Pulmonary Fibrosis – a debilitating and life-limiting illness. The organisation provides support groups and can issue patients with a grant if the illness has had a negative impact on their financial status. Penny’s Fund is the charity’s most signficant donator to date – enabling the creation of a scheme for patients to borrow oxygen concentrators. This allows patients to enjoy holidays and provides more freedom to spend quality time with loved ones

The third charity supported by the Belper Games is Ataxia UK. People suffering with Ataxia generally struggle with movement, balance and speech. Ataxia UK aids people affected by the condition, including family and friends of sufferers, by using donations to fund research into developing safe and effective treatments for the condition. It also recently launched its ‘2020 Vision’ campaign – with the goal of finding a cure for the condition by the year 2020.

Director of Sales and Marketing, Alison Kendall, is delighted that Peveril Homes is supporting the Belper Games for another year, saying, “The Belper Games has been a key part of the local community since it first started in 2013. It attracts huge crowds every year and it is a pleasure to be involved in such a fantastic event that is helping to raise vital money for three local causes that are very close to our hearts,”.

Last year the event raised £37,000 for its three chosen charities and the aim this year is to beat that total through ticket sales and money spent by visitors during the three-day event.

This year’s event will kick-off on Friday 20th July with a movie night and beer festival, followed by the annual ‘We’re A Knockout’ competition on Saturday. It will then conclude with ‘Festival in a Day’ on Sunday 22nd July. All games across the weekend will be accompanied by performances from local musicians, children’s rides and attractions as well as stalls serving a selection of fresh food and drink.

“We would encourage everyone to attend and enjoy a fun-filled family day out whilst also supporting a fantastic cause.” adds Alison.
