Sutton-in-Ashfield is a historic market town situated in the Ashfield district of Nottinghamshire that is proud of its heritage and traditions. This can be seen at the Portland Square Market which still trades in the heart of the town, four days a week.
The area was first settled in Saxon times and the Saxon suffix “ton” means “an enclosure or fenced in clearing”. The town also appears in the Domesday Book in 1086 as “Sutone”.
The town is famous for its coal mining history with its last remaining pit, Sutton colliery, closing in 1989. It was also the birthplace of the Pretty Polly hosiery brand – which called Sutton-in-Ashfield its home from 1927 through to 2005.
On market days, keep your kitchen fully-stocked by indulging in a range of local produce, meats and cheeses. These delights can be enjoyed all year round at Portland Square – which is also home to Britain’s largest sundial.
There are a number of renowned retailers and retail parks throughout the town offering plenty of choice and places to shop during the weekends. Sutton boasts two Aldi’s, a large Asda and B&Q to name but a few.
For those keen to enjoy the occasional tipple, look no further than the popular and award-winning watering hole, The Scruffy Dog on the outskirts of Sutton-in-Ashfield. Real ale, snacks and good conversation is the essence of The Scruffy Dog – well worth a visit.
For young families relocating to Sutton-in-Ashfield, local schools are easy to access and all are rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ in their most recent Ofsted reports.
