Top Tips to Stay Energy Efficient

The way we power, heat, and light our homes produces over 25% of the UK’s carbon emissions. Here's our top energy saving tips.

Top Tips to Stay Energy Efficient

At Peveril Homes we select the best partners to provide energy efficient solutions which not only help save money but also reduce your carbon footprint…

Energy Performance Certificate

The way we power, heat, and light our homes produces over 25% of the UK’s carbon emissions. An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) measures the impact of your home upon the environment, in terms of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission.  Peveril Homes properties are as standard EPC rated B, meaning that properties are extremely energy efficient throughout all aspects including construction (double glazing, loft insulation and wall insulation), boiler and integrated white goods.

Energy Ratings and Energy Efficient White Goods

Our kitchens include the latest range of A/A+ energy rated appliances designed specifically to use less energy and help you reduce both your energy bills and CO2 emissions.

Energy Saving Tips

  • Reduce laundry costs wherever you can - always wait until you have a full load and use a cool 20˚C or 30˚C wash where possible.
  • Whenever you can, dry your clothes outside on a washing line. However, as the great British weather often does not allow for this, so many of us own washer/dryers as a fallback option.
  • Get the most from your washer/dryer - A drying programme will have smaller capacity than a wash cycle, so take out some items when the load has finished. Once the first drying cycle is complete you can swap your dry clothes for the damp items you removed earlier and do a second cycle. Popping a dry tea towel in with damp items, helps them to dry faster – saving on power and time!
  • Make the most out of your fridge freezer’s energy rating – For best performance, set the fridge to 3˚C and the freezer to -18˚C. Defrost regularly and keep the back of the fridge clean and free from build-up of grease and dust which may mean that the fridge must work harder to keep cool.

    Saving Water

On average each person in the UK uses a huge 150L of water a day. Here are some ways we can use our water wisely:

    • Use a sink full or bowl only to do your washing-up – A running tap can waste more than six litres of water a minute, and when it is hot it will hike up your gas bill. Avoid rinsing dishes under running water and try using the water from cooked pasta, rice, or vegetable to rinse your greasy pans.
    • Only switch on your dishwasher when it is full – Do not overload the machine, as this will stop the water circulating properly and you may not get everything clean and have to run the same load again.

    Change your Cooking Habits

Making simple changes to your cooking habits can make a big difference to your energy consumption. Rather than defrosting anything under running hot water as a quick fix, try leaving in the fridge overnight. Boil only the water you need for what you are cooking. Or, even better, do away with boiling altogether and invest in a steamer which will require less water and keep those nutrients locked into your food.
