We’re firm believers that it’s never too early to start learning about the processes involved in building new homes. With that in mind, we recently welcomed a class of children to our award-winning Holborn Place development from Selston Church of England Infant and Nursery School.

Eager to learn and full of excitement, a group of 23, Year 1 pupils arrived at Holborn Place with their teacher Mr Barrett in November to take a guided tour of Holborn Place and get to grips with the basics of how to build a new home.

Led by our Site Manager Adam Pinder, the group donned mini high vis jackets, which the children were allowed to keep at the end of the day, and set out on a tour of the site to learn about the processes we follow on site.

As Adam explains, it was important for the pupils to understand every stage of building a new home so that they are not under the illusion that a home is simply just ‘built’.

“As with the actual build process, we started at the beginning and explained how and why we lay the foundations of a house before any walls and floors are incorporated into the construction,” says Adam. “I was keen for them to understand that homes are not just simply ‘built’ on top of grass and instead, give them a thorough insight into the preparation required before any of the bits you can see when a house is completed,”

He adds, “It was also important for me to stress the need for teamwork on a building site and emphasise how hard work and pulling together can make a real difference to a project. That’s a great life lesson for them to take away from the tour, especially at such a young age. If they can learn to work together and collaborate both inside and outside of school, then they will go far,”

For Mr Barrett, the experiences and lessons learnt on site for the group were invaluable and he is grateful for the time given by Adam to show them around.

“There’s certain things these children can never learn in a classroom environment – so exposure to as many real life situations as possible throughout their education is crucial to give them a rounded perspective of the world they will be entering into in the future,”

“The team at Peveril Homes were very accommodating and provided an eye opening day for our pupils. I would like to extend a sincere thank you from myself and on behalf of Selston C of E School and the students that attended, for Adam’s time and for giving us access to his specialist skills and expertise.”
