Partnership provides new lease of life to Ashby Primary School’s land
When Holywell Flour Mill burned down in 2018 it presented an amazing opportunity for Peveril Homes to build a contemporary, gated development of quality new homes located a short walk from Ashby’s characterful town centre with its extensive array of shops, restaurants and other attractions, including a medieval castle and unique Bath grounds, offering the perfect blend of town centre and rural living.
Tucked away from the main road, the Holywell Mill development had limited frontage, which meant the Peveril Homes team needed extra space to accommodate the site office and staff parking while they worked.
As the team prepared to kickstart their new project, unused grassland at the entrance to the development caught their eye thanks to its doorstep location. The land is owned by Ashby Primary School – Holywell Flour Mill’s next-door neighbour – and was the perfect place for construction parking and site offices.
Leasing the land from the school also presented a wonderful opportunity for Peveril Homes to repurpose the space, ensuring the school community would benefit from the use of their grassland.
As part of the agreement, Peveril Homes would renovate the land at the end of the 24-month lease helping provide a greater purpose to the school’s underused area.
Tom Broster, Land and Technical Manager at Peveril Homes explained: “As a local boy, I’m well versed in the area around our Holywell Mill development. Due to the limited space around this site, I knew we’d need an alternative for storing materials, office space and parking.
“When we saw the school’s unused land the team knew it was a great opportunity for us to not only support a local school but to create some temporary space for our development while we worked.”
Alongside an initial payment to the school for the lease of the land, Peveril Homes committed to making a planning application to resurface and fence the land, meaning the school would have a useable car park once the lease was over.
Tom continued: “We’re now at the end of our project and the school is looking forward to an upgraded car park to replace their previously unused land. Instead of sending money to the school, the lease was paid with our services to create a safe area for staff and visitors to park meaning the school will now have 13 new parking spaces.”
Ashby Primary School has also enjoyed great benefits from the renovated area.
Head Teacher, Liz Powell said: “Our school mission is to inspire everyone to achieve, challenge and encourage. As a community-based Christian school it’s important for us to encourage our neighbours to achieve great things too. That’s why leasing our underused land to Peveril Homes was a wonderful partnership.
"Not only did we support a local business in building stylish new family homes for the area, but we also gained a functioning piece of land that has improved our school environment. We wish Peveril Homes the best of luck in its future endeavours and we're looking forward to welcoming more families into the area.”
