Top tips on planning a Jubilee street party!
You might think that hosting a street party for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee is complicated and not worth the hassle. On quite the contrary, hosting a street party is straightforward and a fantastic way to get your neighbours involved – from baking treats to making beautiful decorations. We’ve put together our top tips to help you organise the perfect gathering!
According to gov.uk, a ‘street party’ is defined as a private event that’s only advertised to residents. You don’t need a special license or insurance unless you plan on selling alcohol or the event is open to the wider public to attend.
Getting started
Approach your neighbours first of all to see if they could lend a helping hand in hosting and to check availability. You might not need to, but it’s worth contacting with your local council about road closure rules. Alternatively, you could decide to host the party in a garden or local park.
Planning
Once you have your neighbours on board, decide who will take what responsibilities and pop up some posters. You could plan for each household to bring one platter of food for example – you could even invite community competition and vote for the best cake! You’ll also need to decide on drinks to share as well as fun family-friendly games to play.
There’s lots of free resources on the official Platinum Jubilee celebrations page. From bunting templates, colouring sheets and posters to recipes and even a music playlist that’s suitable for everyone! Find them here.
A week before, don’t forget to send round a reminder of the event to your neighbours as they may need to move their cars to accommodate the party. You could knock on doors to encourage shy or elderly residents, otherwise, post handwritten notes through letterboxes with all the details.
On the day
Begin with setting up the road closure barriers if they’re needed and decorate to your hearts content, the more the better to get celebrations started!
Most importantly, enjoy yourself! Make sure to take lots of photographs and get to know your neighbours in true British street-party spirit.
Once the festivities are over, clear up as a community and open up the road at the agreed time.
From all at Peveril Homes, we hope you enjoy your street parties and we’re looking forward to seeing our communities come together to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
